Pastor Michael g. Cunningham
Michael g. Cunningham is a native of the State of Kentucky. He completed his secondary education in the public schools of Louisville.
Education and Awards : Pastor Cunningham received his undergraduate training at Boston College, Simmons College of Kentucky and graduate training at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. He has received numerous awards for creative writing in the areas of American and Church history. He formerly served as Pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Louisville Kentucky for five years.
Pastoral History : In May 1984 Pastor Cunningham received and accepted the call to pastor Historic East Lake Church of Detroit, Michigan. East Lake is one of the oldest congregations on Detroit’s east side, and has grown from 500 members in 1984 to one of the largest and most influential congregations in the metropolitan area. In February of 1997 the congregation completed a $1.8 million Family Life Center situated on a 10 acre campus, which features a college-size gymnasium with flexible seating for worship services for nearly 2000 persons. Pastor Cunningham was honored by his peers as “Pastor of the Year” by the Council of Baptist Pastors in 1997, and East Lake launched the “Daily Walk Radio Series” with Pastor Cunningham as host of the #1 program in Christian radio in Detroit and lower Canada for a number of years. He presently hosts ‘The Morning Connection” each Sunday morning on W.C.H.B.am 1200.
Community Based Ministries : Under Pastor Cunningham’s leadership, East Lake Church is credited with the development of a 150 child Head Start, a state-certified substance and alcohol abuse intervention programs that are open to the community, an award-winning basketball outreach ministry a.k.a. the E.B.A, the 350-student Beacon International Academy; a public academy for grades K-5, Promiseland Day Care Center, the Kingdom Men’s Café and Catering Service( a four star restaurant located within the church complex.), the Beacon Bookstore and Gift Shop. Among the many Ministry cells established under Pastor Cunningham’s leadership are: Kingdom Men’s Usher, Sister –Sister Ministry, Women’s Usher Ministry, Kingdom Kids Summer Day camp, Youth Usher Ministry, Children's Usher Ministry, Puppet and Mime Ministries of the Performing Arts, and many other community-based ministries that has transformed East Lake into, “the church that never sleeps” in the city. East Lake will construct a multi-million dollar, Worship and Conference Center in the coming future. Mr. Cunningham serves as Chairman of the Board of Project Redemption Non-Profit Housing Corporation, a faith-based non profit, whose mission is to build affordable housing targeting first time home owners. Project Redemption is a H.U.D. and city certified Community Housing Development Organization (C.H.D.O.). He’s also President and C.E.O. of U.C.I., a faith-based development collaborative with over 200 pastors out of various denominations who share a vision of rebuilding inner city neighborhoods in Detroit. Mr. Cunningham was recently appointed as a board member of the Greater Wayne County Economic Development Corporation and the Greater Wayne County Brownfield Commission, and is the Executive Managing Partner of both Southeast Detroit Community Development L.L.C. and North Jefferson Corridor Development L.L.C. of Detroit, a major development entity within the City of Detroit.
